Personalized Dog Training and Support in Manhattan and Beyond

At Graceful Canine, our dog training is built around your unique needs and your dog’s personality, right here in Manhattan or virtually anywhere in the NYC area. We help dogs navigate busy city streets, crowded parks, and apartment life while teaching calm, confident behavior. From leash reactivity and fear of strangers to basic obedience and city manners, our positive reinforcement training keeps walks, outings, and daily life enjoyable for you and your dog.
Step One: Initial Consultation ($250 for 60–90 minutes)
Your journey begins with a detailed Initial Consultation. Before we meet, I’ll send you a history form to gather important information about your dog’s behavior, environment, and routine. This gives me a clear picture of your goals and the challenges you are facing in the city.
During the consultation we will:
- Observe your dog in the home and outdoors
- Identify top priorities and training goals
- Begin working on foundation skills right away
- Review your dog’s history (if any) and daily routine
You’ll also receive clear, easy-to-follow handouts and a starter kit (treat pouch, clicker if needed, and demo products such as Kongs). Afterward, I send you a written training plan with step-by-step instructions, links to helpful videos, and resources to review at your own pace.
Step Two: Customized Training Plan
After the consultation, I design a plan tailored to your dog and your lifestyle. The plan includes:
- Clear goals (for example, calm leash walking, reduced barking, puppy basics)
- Step-by-step milestones so you know exactly what progress looks like
- Homework exercises that fit into your routine without being overwhelming
- Weekly feedback so you can adjust and stay on track
Step Three: Ongoing Sessions
This is where real progress happens. Depending on whether you choose Private Sessions or Day Training, we will meet regularly to build skills and troubleshoot challenges.
- Private Sessions focus on coaching you directly. I demonstrate exercises, then guide you as you practice. You’ll learn not only what to do, but why it works, so you can confidently apply the skills on your own. Packages are available for clients who want structured, ongoing support, and we will discuss which option best suits your goals during the Initial Consultation.
- Day Training allows me to do the consistent practice with your dog while you’re busy. Think of it as me doing the “homework” for you during the week, then meeting with you to show what your dog has learned and how to keep it going at home. This approach helps your dog learn faster and makes it easier for you to maintain progress without feeling overwhelmed. Package options are available, and we’ll decide together what schedule works best for you during the Initial Consultation.
After each session, you receive a progress update with next steps and any adjustments to the plan.
Step Four: Support Between Sessions
Learning doesn’t stop when the session ends. I provide:
- Follow-up emails with written notes, video demos, and product links
- Ongoing email support for quick questions between appointments
- Optional video recordings of your sessions for review anytime
This ensures you never feel “on your own” and can keep training consistent throughout the week.
Step Five: Graduation and Maintenance
As your dog masters their goals, we focus on maintaining progress in real-life settings. This might mean practicing in busier environments, adding distractions, or building reliability around other dogs and people.
When you’re ready to “graduate” from formal training, you’ll have:
- A confident, well-mannered dog suited for NYC life
- A toolkit of training exercises for continued success
- The option for refresher sessions or maintenance check-ins as needed
Our Services
Reactive Dog Training for NYC Dogs
In Manhattan, reactivity can turn even a simple walk into a daily challenge. A dog that barks, growls, or lunges at other dogs or people is not being disobedient but reacting out of stress, fear, or frustration. In a busy city filled with crowds, bikes, traffic, and constant noise, those reactions can quickly become overwhelming for both you and your dog.
My training approach gives you practical tools to handle tough situations, such as teaching your dog to focus on you around distractions, rewarding calm behavior, and replacing explosive reactions with better coping strategies. With consistent practice, walks become less stressful and you can enjoy the city together with more confidence.
Puppy Training
Early training is one of the best investments you can make in your dog’s future. Puppies in NYC face challenges most dogs never encounter, from elevators and subway sounds to crowded sidewalks and constant new people. Starting as early as 8 weeks, we focus on building comfort and confidence with daily life while preventing common issues like fear, anxiety, and aggression. I guide you in introducing your puppy to new sights and sounds safely, so they grow up relaxed instead of overwhelmed. We also cover crate training, house training in apartments, leash walking, and teaching your puppy how to settle calmly at home.
Puppies can learn leash walking and other exercises as early as 8 weeks old, and the socialization window closes at approximately 12 weeks. Starting early gives your puppy the best chance to grow into a confident, happy adult who thrives in the city.
City Manners
Good manners in the city go far beyond sit and stay. A reliable recall (“Come”) can prevent accidents if your dog slips a leash or darts toward the street. “Leave it” keeps your dog safe from sidewalk trash, discarded food, or harmful substances that are unfortunately common in New York. Loose-leash walking skills are especially valuable here, turning stressful tug-of-war walks into calm, enjoyable outings, even in crowds or busy intersections. I also teach polite greetings for when your dog meets people in elevators, building lobbies, or outdoor cafes. City manners training makes life smoother not only for you but for everyone who shares space with your dog.
How We Train
At Graceful Canine, I use only positive reinforcement because it works, builds trust, and makes training enjoyable for both you and your dog. Instead of focusing on punishment or correction, we reward the behaviors we want to see more of, whether that’s sitting politely instead of jumping, walking calmly instead of pulling, or looking at you instead of barking at another dog. Rewards can be food, toys, play, praise, or whatever motivates your individual dog.
Positive reinforcement is especially effective in a busy city like Manhattan, where dogs are constantly faced with distractions. By teaching your dog to make good choices and rewarding them for those choices, you get reliable behavior in real-world situations, not just in training sessions. This approach also reduces stress and fear, so your dog learns to feel safe and confident no matter what the city throws at them.
My goal is to set both you and your dog up for success. With the right guidance, you’ll not only solve behavior issues but also build a strong, trusting relationship that lasts a lifetime.
